Reading is My Secret Power is the 2019 theme for National Book Week, organised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Highlights include the School Book Parade. ABC Bunyip was represented at the local School Book Parade.
Book Week
Yay! My favourite week of the year is finally here! It is National Book Week (17 – 23 August 2019) here in Australia and books are being celebrated around the country. What better celebration can there be? Books, books and more books!
Competition
Every year, The Children’s Book Council of Australia organises this amazing event and declares the festivities open with the announcement of the winners of the CBCA Book of the Year Awards. For authors and illustrators of children’s books entered in the competition, the nail biting is over. While it is fun to win a competition, the real joy for authors and illustrators is knowing the immersion into books that kids will experience in the coming week.
What is Happening
Reading is My Secret Power is the theme this year. Right around Australia, amazing things are happening. There are pop up bookshops in schools, author talks, and incredible library displays.
School Book Parade
Best of all, there is the School Book Parade. Students dress up as their favourite book characters, according to the theme of the year. In anticipation of this magical event, kids and parents spend hours agonising, preparing, designing, and creating incredible costumes. At some stage as the crescendo builds, they will find their way to Spotlight . They are Book Week Sponsors. For many, the School Book Parade is the highlight of the year.

ABC Bunyip at the School Book Parade
Last year, I was super excited to learn that a student in Boddington, WA had dressed up as ABC Bunyip for the School Book Parade. How awesome is that? ABC Bunyip hanging out with Super Heroes! Sadly, I have no photos of this stupendous event.
